Different ways to view the data

We have three different views, based on feedback from users about the most useful way to display the data.

  • System view

System view provides a simple overview of water flow rates, release rates and river heights across the River Murray system and its tributaries. In this view we have nominated the most relevant data that is available to show water moving through the system.

Selecting an icon or site name allows you to click through to more information for that location. Data may include (if available) for each site is: water level, water temp, salinity, flow, release and rainfall.

Alerts do not appear on system view.

  • List view

The list view is a summary table which lists data measured for each location.

River gauges, storages, and weirs in the Murray–Darling Basin

The table can be can be sorted to make it easier to find the information you are interested in. You can sort by:

  • Type: River gauge, Water storage gauge or Weir gauge.
  • Location: names of each specific site where river data is measured
  • River: Campaspe, Darling, Goulburn, Kiewa, Loddon, Mitta, Murray, Murrumbidgee, Ovens, Wakool

  • Map view

Map view allows you to navigate to water storage information for places that interest you. Controls on the map are:

  • Icons: hover over an icon on the map to see the location name, click through for available data on that site
  • Sort: filter the types of locations visible on the map but using the icon check boxes in bottom right. Select what sets of information are displayed by checking storage, river gauge or weir.
  • Zoom: displays "+" and "-" buttons for changing the zoom level of the map. This control in the top left corner of the map.
  • Pan: you can move left and right, up and down (North, South, East and West) on the map in 2 ways (1) by using the Pan controls above the zoom bar (top left) or (2) by 'grabbing' the map with a mouse-click-and-hold.

Map view is not available on mobile view

Graphs

The Graphs are accessed via any of the views and display detailed information for each site. They show a plot for the last 12 months for each category of available data. If there is not a tab for a type of data it means it is not measured/available for that site.

What can you see?

  • Lines: the coloured line shows the daily data for the present year.
  • Left axis: units of measurement
  • Right axis: shows the months of the year (12 months prior to current date)

What can you do?

  • Zoom: to select a specific date range use your mouse to click-and-hold Right click to reset. (Note zoom is not available on mobile version)
  • Hover over a point on the line graph to see the data for that particular day
  • Download chart data: download a CSV file with the data for the previous 12 months
  • Download historical data: these files are updated on the 2nd of each month.

Alerts

Alerts appear if there is an active flow advice or recent media release associated with a location. Alerts do not appear on system view.

Browsers

River data works best using Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Internet Explorer 10 and above. Using one of these browsers may improve your experience when using the website

Mobile and tablets - automatic redirection

The river data website includes automatic device detection. The website has responsive design and the version of the website displayed depends on the screen size of your device.

The default view is different for mobiles (list view) than tablets and desktop (system view). You can bookmark your favourite view.

Some functions are not available on the mobile view – map view and zoom on graphs.

How well this automatic redirection works is dependent on the compatibility of the device you are using. We are continually reviewing our responsive design and updating the devices that are automatically directed to the mobile website, based on compatibility and advances in smart phones.

Flood warnings

The Bureau of Meteorology is responsible for issuing flood warnings to the general public. Check up-to-date flood warnings in your area

Weekly reports

We encourage you to register to receive our weekly River Murray weekly reports. These reports provide updates on operations, river flows, storage inflows, gauge levels, rainfall and salinity data.
